When the allure of the forbidden takes a deadly turn…
Shaye
He never cared about me. He never would. He was always on the take, but this time he took too much.
I betrayed my family tonight. I lost my virginity tonight. I was ready to give it all up tonight.
I loved him, and he treated me like I was no better than the dirt on the bottom of his Louboutin loafer. Big mistake. One thought makes me smile through the hot tears streaming down my face.
I could have him killed.
Nico
I only wanted to f*ck her. I tried to convince myself that’s all it was. But I’m a damn liar. I lied to myself about how I feel, and I lied to her when I told her I wanted her to leave.
I didn’t. I wanted her…no, needed her…to stay.
Now I’m dodging calls from her maniacal brother, who, if he found out I’d so much as seen her in that sexy as hell lingerie, would wrap his beefy hands around my throat and squeeze until my eyeballs popped out of the sockets.
Kristen Luciani is a USA Today bestselling author and momtrepreneur with a penchant for stilettos, Silicon Valley, plunging necklines and grapefruit martinis. As a deep-rooted romantic who prefers juicy drama to fill the lives of anyone other than her, she tried her hand at creating a world of enchantment, sensuality, and intrigue, finally uncovering her true passion. No pun intended…

Let Me Know When It’s Live–>https://bit.ly/2HBu3th
A shiver runs through me despite the blast of heat from the hallway floor vent that toasts my quivering legs. I reach out, my fist about half an inch from the bedroom door, poised to knock. Wait, why? He knows I’m coming. He left the front door unlocked for me. Jesus, I can’t even think straight anymore. Memories pop between my ears like bullets. Me sitting on Nico’s bed, watching a video on his iPad, Nico’s hand skimming my bare arm, Nico’s lips on mine, Nico’s tongue…
Stop!
What the hell is wrong with me? His grandfather just died, and all I can do is think about that night…the one that never should have happened, the one I continue to dream about, the one I relive every time I close my eyes.
Forget the fact that I hadn’t heard from him since.
And that he’s my brother’s best friend.
And that he has 1-800-Hoebags on speed dial.
Nico Salesi will never be mine, and I’ve come to terms with that. Kind of.
I’d hoped to accept it once I got to college, but that didn’t happen. None of the guys I’d met could hold a candle to Nico. I couldn’t find the same pools of the darkest chocolate brown that begged me to drown in them, the ones that sparkled with excitement over the release of a new Marvel super hero movie, ones that deepened with lust when they gazed at me. And I definitely couldn’t find a pair of lips as bitable, ones that tasted like a wide variety of Jolly Rancher flavors, ones I wanted plastered against my own…and then on other areas—
I grasp the cool brass doorknob in my shaking hand and twist it. The door creaks open, and I squint in the dimly lit room. His bed is in the back corner of the expansive space, and he’s sprawled out on his back, tossing a football up and down. He doesn’t look up, and that should be my first clue that he doesn’t give a flying fuck about me. I clench my fists, trying to control my disappointment.
He never called, never texted, never emailed. Not until today, and of course, I come running the second he asks. I never fail to make the wrong choices.
He doesn’t care about anything except his business dealings. He’d never let anything compromise his place in life, least of all me.
It was a kiss. I have to forget about it. It’s not why I’m here. I’m here for Grandpa Vito, not for Nico.
Maybe if I keep repeating those bullshit lies, I’ll finally convince my heart that they’re true.
I inch toward the bed, my heart thudding against my ribcage. I can feel beads of perspiration pop up along the back of my neck, a typical reaction to his presence. My stomach is twisted like a Bavarian pretzel. Good God, will I ever be able to get over this guy?
And why doesn’t he stop throwing the fucking football? He’s the one who called me.
And just like that, he makes one final catch and sits up. His eyes aren’t sparkling. They’re dark, lost, empty. Soulless. The vacant stare makes my chest tighten and I stop, uncertain about my next steps.
He slides off the bed and creeps toward me. His dark hair is tousled, like he’d just woken up from a fitful sleep. There are bags under his eyes, and his normally rosy cheeks are all but drained of color.
Tears sting my eyes when his hands grasp my shoulders. “Shaye,” he murmurs in his deep, gravelly voice.
“I’m so sorry,” I whisper. “He was such a good man, and I feel terrible for you all.”
His hands move to my hair, twisting a hot pink tendril of hair around his index finger. “You dyed your hair.”
My hand flies to the chunky streaks I’d just had added to the ends of my blonde hair. “Yeah…” I breathe him in, immediately tipsy on the scent of watermelon Jolly Ranchers.
“I like it.”
“Thanks,” I whisper.
He nods over to his desk. “He bought that for you for Christmas. It’s the collector’s edition.”
A sob rises in my throat when my eyes fall to the gift, memories of our marathon Scrabble sessions wallpapering my mind. It felt like a lifetime ago, when things were so simple and the biggest dilemma I had was to decide which word would yield me the most points during our cutthroat games. “I love it. I’ll always treasure it.”
“He missed you at Christmas. Made me promise to get it to you before you went back to school.”
“I should have gone to see him. I’ll never forgive myself for not saying goodbye.”
“Don’t beat yourself up over it. He knew the deal, Shaye.”
“I hate that it kept me away.”
“But you’re here now.”
“Yeah…” My heart is pounding like a jackhammer, drowning out all sound, and I almost miss his reply. A lump the size of a golf ball has taken up residence in my throat and squeezing out a response is near impossible.
But, as it happens, talk is overrated.
He pulls me close, bending down to press his swollen lips to mine – hot, intense, and hungry for any crumb I’m willing to drop. His strong hands fist my long hair, his kiss deepening with need. I wrap my arms around his tall, muscular frame, melting into his warmth.
My mind is screaming at me to pull away, to stop this craziness. This behavior is so unlike Nico. He never loses control or shows his hand. It’s why he’s such a valuable asset to the family.
He doesn’t really want me.
Or does he?

The Butterfly Healer by Muffy Wilson

Can strangers hide in secret, as dark things, to be loved between the shadow and the soul?

Oliver Brainard, an insurance actuary, is a man who has experienced love from only one woman—his mother. He has never loved, nor lived, outside the confines of his brownstone. He, as a middle-aged man, is the man few people see and fewer people even acknowledge. He is the quiet one who, bound by his deformity, always finishes last.

New to the neighborhood and curious by nature, Victoria Blakely is an avid collector. She has been watching Oliver for weeks from her upstairs window. She witnessed a crippled man, crushed by time and denial, resigned to his physical plight who is apparently content with his circumstances. Never touched by kindness or love, his life has never been lived.

He is perfect. Can Victoria awaken the freedom in Oliver to escape his self-imposed shackles for the bondage of love? Or will his painful fear deny her the pleasures of unfurling his life poised above the precipice of pleasure?

This is the story of how strangers become healers, knitting lives together with love and trust, restoring hope and discovering passion through a timeless and sometimes perilous innocent freedom—the freedom of butterflies.

Dangerous Bliss!

Bad Medicine by Red L. Jameson

Nurse Ian Ryder, or just Ryder, is everything I want. He’s big. He’s tough. He’s oh-so-sexy with his leather jacket and motorcycle that I’ve had indecent fantasies about. And even better, he seems emotionally closed off. Not the kind of man who would ask a lot of personal questions. The perfect candidate to reveal my secret—I’m still a virgin, worried I’ll die this way if I don’t do something about it soon. Somehow, I’m going to convince Ryder to play doctor with me.

Dr. Asha Whitetail is completely out of my league. Intelligent and sophisticated. And those glasses she wears makes me think about steaming up her scrubs. When an awkward moment turns into a hot kiss, I realize I’m going to do everything I can to have her—not just her body but her heart too. Problem is, she seems to want only one thing from me. So I’m going to make her an offer she can’t refuse. I’ll give her what she wants, if she spends time with me, gets to know me, the real me, while I do everything in my power to convince her she can play doctor with me…for life.

Chicks Dig Scars by Kathleen Grieve

When death steps in…

Committed and compassionate intensive care nurse, Rachel O’Dea, will do anything to save her patients. But when she loses a kind and loving man whom she forged a fatherly relationship with, Rachel unravels.

…or so everyone thinks.

Free clinic doctor, Devon Jameson, needs more hands on deck. He can’t possibly handle all the medical cases alone. When Rachel walks in, volunteering her services, he knows he has no choice other than to take her on board as she proves her worth when a pediatric trauma is left on his doorstep and there’s no one else to assist.

As the two begin working together, their lives intertwine and the attraction intensifies. Scarred deeply by their past and their pain, Rachel and Devon begin a future only angels could predict.

Dynamic Destiny by Angelica Dawson

Destiny lives a double life. Her days are spent as the mild-mannered, acquiescent administration assistant to Dr. Edgerton, but by night, she is Mistress D, the masked Domme that makes others squirm.

After a chance run-in with a high school friend, Jeremy Edgerton is introduced to the BDSM lifestyle. He quickly determines his place isn’t as a dominant, but submissive—specifically submitting to Mistress D.

Can they shift their fates enough to change their roles completely?

Paranormal Anatomy By Elvira Bathory

And William Wolfe, an aggressive feline shifter, happens to be one of those reasons.

William has become obsessed with Aleah since they started working together, and since the announcement of her engagement to Wyatt became public things have become worse. Once he started rumors flying about how close she and Dr. Morgan were, the rest of the team regarded Aleah as ’the woman who slept her way into her position’ in the hospital. Trying to prove their theory wrong, she loses track of what is most important to her: her job and how to save the supernatural community.

He’s actually a werewolf—he just doesn’t know it yet.

Anneke isn’t just a psychiatrist—she’s also an empath, meaning she can read minds, and influence thoughts and behavior. She rarely uses her powers, but recognizes she may have no other choice as Caleb must be convinced of his supernatural status before the next full moon arrives. When it does, though, she finds herself going way beyond her duty of care to ensure Caleb doesn’t hurt or kill anyone when he transforms. But at what cost?

Before Tomorrow Comes by Lashell Collins

When you’re born into the mob, can you ever truly break free?

Jeremiah Tobin is a mob assassin. The world he comes from is sometimes ruthless, often dangerous, always lethal. A world where things like love and romance have no bearing, and might even get you killed. Or task you with killing the woman you love.

Dr. Monique Reed wants nothing to do with the mob life. She took an oath to do no harm, and made a personal vow to herself that the ugliness of her family’s business would never touch her life. That was before she fell in love with Jeremiah Tobin. Before she found herself sleeping with the enemy.

In a world where family trumps everything, and loyalty means the difference between life and death, Jeremiah and Monique find the kind of love neither of them ever expected – a love that throws them into a fight for their lives, and their future.

That knowledge didn’t make the devastating loss any easier. Raging inside him, his phoenix refuses to accept his decision to let her go. Tempting Doctor Forever By Holly Cortelyou

An old crush. A hot doctor. And one tempting night with consequences.

Samantha Barrett’s got it all under control…if wrangling a classroom of rowdy ninth-graders, chasing a delinquent dog, or living with your grandmother don’t count against you. Now, Ethan’s eyes may spark with attraction when he sees her, but his cool, professional demeanor demands she keep her distance. After a string of ill-starred romances, Sam’s sure that common sense will rule the day, right? Of course, she barely notices Ethan’s sizzling-hot, hard abs, broad shoulders or his heart-melting dedication to his teen son.

Dr. Ethan Cordero has it all mapped out for his fresh start in Barret Ridge. Only two things count — get his son, Mateo, through high school and grow his medical practice. That’s all good until Samantha Barrett charges into his backyard, gets under his skin, and lifts that shadow lurking over his heart. But his best friend’s little sister keeps mixing up his well-laid plans with that curvy little backside of hers, her joyful laugh, and her surprising bond with Mateo.

Between a con artist canine, a confused grandma, a backstabbing stepmother, and one decadent chocolate cake, Ethan finds that every path winds right back into the arms of the oh-so-enticing girl next door, Sam.

My life is a friggin’ fairytale — just not the kind any single girl would ever want to star in.
Laney
Like any good heroine, I’ve got a few challenges to face. Getting my son to wear pants is one; dealing with my snoozefest of a job is another. Then there’s the Beast, my freeloading brother who’s worn a permanent dent in the couch at my new place. And no fairytale would be complete without the smoking out prince, of course. Too bad he’s a complete ass.
Everything in me screams to steer clear of Nate Murphy. Because, if life has taught me anything, there is no such thing as happily ever after.
Nate
I may not be a superhero, but I do my best to come to the rescue when I’m needed. And, hey, I just moved halfway across the country after a single phone call from my mom. But being back home and taking on the responsibilities involved makes me a bit cranky at times. Unfortunately, the one time I completely lose my cool is in front of the hottest girl I’ve ever met. I’ve got my work cut out for me if I’m going to fix this. But I will fix this.
I’ll be anything Laney Monroe needs me to be … a superhero, a prince, or just a guy she might take a chance on.

Mark Beckett is the most annoying, patronizing, arrogant jerk on the face of the earth. So, naturally, I can’t get the damn man out of my head.

Fiona
Like the old saying goes, I’m a jill of all trades but a master of none. What I lack in skill, however, I make up for in enthusiasm — something certain people (ahem) find irritating. But I have my reasons for living my life the way I do, for diving into one project after another and trying to make a difference. And if Mark Beckett doesn’t like it, he knows where to find the door. I don’t need his approval … or his panty-melting kisses.

Mark
I enjoy the simple things in life: a job well done, a cold beer, a hot woman … you get the idea. But there’s nothing simple about the mess I just found myself in. The last thing I need is a pint-sized princess sticking her nose in my business and pushing every damn one of my buttons like it’s her job. But Fiona Pierce may be the only one with the tools to solve my problems — and the power to change everything.

Luck is no lady … in fact, she can be a downright bitch.

Bailey
Let’s get one thing straight. I am not your typical girl. Sure, I’ve got all the parts, but I’ve been a stubborn, irreverent tomboy since the womb. Despite my Irish blood, bad luck makes a sport of messing with me, especially when it comes to men. But my shields are firmly in place now; nothing can touch me again. Except maybe Jake Beckett. He just might make this tomboy do the girliest thing in the world — fall head over heels in love.

Jake
I’m a pretty lucky guy. I have a phenomenal family, a career I love, and I’m building a brand-new life back in my hometown. And, not to be a jerk about it, but I do more than all right with the ladies. Everything’s going according to plan — like I said, I’m a lucky guy. That is, until my luck runs out. Until I meet the girl I call “Irish.”

Irony can go kiss my ass.

They say opposites attract. Someone needs to tell that to Emerson Scott.

Gavin
All I ever wanted was to play ball. When an act of sheer stupidity took that dream away. I thought I’d never bounce back. But now I have the opportunity to coach an up-and-coming phenom, and I’m giving it all I’ve got. The fact that I’ve been lusting after his smoking-hot sister only sweetens the deal. Emerson may be buttoned up like a school librarian, but I play my best when I’m under pressure … and I always bring the heat.

Emerson
Never lose focus. Never lost control. Those are the first two rules in my carefully calculated plan for success. Finding myself thrown into the role of guardian for my little brother was not part of that plan. But I can adjust for Jay’s sake; I’m not about to let one change make me lose sight of my goals. Too bad Jay’s hot young baseball coach doesn’t seem to give a fig about my plans. He has one of his own — and it includes me. Gavin Monroe may play like a pro, but that boy will never win this game.

About the Author

Award-winning author Sylvie Stewart is addicted to Romantic Comedy and Contemporary Romance, and she’s not looking for a cure. She hails from the great state of North Carolina, so it’s no surprise that most of her books are set in the Tar Heel state. She’s a wife to a hilarious dude, and mommy to nine-year-old twin boys who tend to take after their father in every way. Sylvie often wonders if they’re actually hers, but then she remembers being a human incubator for a gazillion months. Ah, good times.

Sylvie began publishing when her kids started elementary school, and she loves sharing her stories with readers and hopefully making them laugh and swoon a bit along the way. If she’s not in her comfy green writing chair, she’s probably camping and kayaking with her family or having a glass of wine while binge-watching Hulu. Or she’s been kidnapped — so what are you doing just sitting there?!!

Trigger Warnings about rape

#99CENTS AmazonB&NGoodreads

Anna Walters-Simmons has just lost her stepfather. For her and her mother, it’s no big loss; the abusive bastard had been nothing but trouble for the past eleven years. Unfortunately, his death has brought another trouble into their lives: Brian, Anna’s stepbrother who, for reasons still unclear, murdered his own father. When one of the few shimmers of goodness in Anna’s life—her boyfriend, Matt—rapes her, how will she survive the darkness these problems stir within her?

“Stop looking at me like that.”- Rafe Brown

“Like what?”- Anna Simmons

“Like you’re starving,” Rafe smirked down at her.

AmazonB&NGoodreads

Oh, the tangled webs we weave—especially in fiction! Rafe and Anna are back, and this time, their hearts are not the only ones at risk of aching. With the return of Eric Dayton and the Prestons, Rafe, Anna, Pat, and their friends are on-edge and on-guard. And now that their flawless reputations have been tarnished, who knows what Rafe’s and Anna’s abusers/rapists will do for revenge. Will evil—and money and power—win out over good? Will the ghosts of their pasts drive a wedge between Rafe and Anna? And how will the relationships and drama of their loved ones affect them?

“You… destroy… me,” he couldn’t help saying between deep, wolfish kisses. “You… absolutely shatter me.” – Rafe Brown

AmazonB&NGoodreads

The day of Aunt Bella and Peter Preston’s wedding is approaching, and Rafe and Anna know that they have to do everything possible in order to stop it. They have a plan which, thanks to a sly maid named Suzi, they might be able to pull off. That is, if their own emotional struggles with each other and the Prestons don’t get in the way first. What follows are 160 pages of conspiracy, tension, double-crossing, and, of course, sex and romance. Will good finally triumph over evil? Will the Prestons and Eric Dayton finally get what they deserve, and will Rafe and Anna finally get the peace that they long for? Most importantly, who will make it out alive?

“Stay away from her. Anna is mine.” Rafe glared down at him, his eyes going opaque, meaning business. – Rafe Brown

“She was mine first, brother,” Matt grinned back roguishly. – Matt Preston

What is your book about?
Heartaches Bad Boy Vibes is an insight to what is faced by many the world over. Told in a three-part series, Heartaches Bad Boy Vibes is a love story that emerges from the ruins of two shattered souls. Anna Simmons and Rafe Brown have both experienced the very worst humanity has to offer and that too at the hands of those they once trusted.

It’s a story that I hope addresses a lot of hard-hitting issues that has been plaguing society since the start of time. Sexual abuse and the victimization of those who have suffered the abuse is a matter that has been overlooked by too many for too long. I first penned this story and put it up on Wattpad in 2013.

Five years on and I am still advocating its need to be told- to be read- and most importantly – to be understood- in all its explicit glory. It is my hope that the experience will if nothing more, enlighten the readers to the plight of so many.

Heartaches Bad Boy Vibes the trilogy has been controversial from the very start. It invoked strong reactions from those who read it- but the focus was not where it should have been. Strangely enough, the focus was sadly on use of harsh language, on the explicit sex scenes, on Anna Simmon’s reactions to the pleasure and dependency she felt from the rape drug.

Drug addiction is because it incites pleasure- I don’t get why Anna has been victimised because of it- and by the readers

But despite the above, I believe Heartaches Bad Boy Vibes has been the success it was meant to be. The resistance to change is always adversary and I looked at each negative feedback as it was meant to be- a seed of change has been planted. Its growth will be watered by the penmanship of another who will pick up the cause and fly with it.

Why did you write it?
I believe it was a newspaper article of rape that triggered my action into penning down this story. Naturally there have been plenty of such articles, plenty of reported stories of rape, plenty of stories of parents worried for their sons and daughters being exposed to such abuse but as always, it would be that one article that would push my need to pen down a fictitious story- that I would naively hope – to end all such real stories.

The below is an extract of the statistics that I have sought out from a website that only served to give urgency to my written words.

Australia has one of the highest rates of reported sexual assault in the world, but support workers say the number of offenders facing court and receiving prison sentences is too low.

Australia has one of the highest rates of reported sexual assault in the world, at almost 92 people per 100,000 of the population, according to the United Nations. Another survey has quoted the Australian rate at more than double the global average.

According to the UN, Australia ranks below on South Africa in rates of reported rapes.

Countries such as Swaziland, Canada, Jamaica and Sweden follow with rates of reported rape per 100,000 of the population coming in at 76.1, 68.2, 50.8 and 40.6 respectively.

Neighbouring New Zealand reported a rate of 32.2 per 100,000 of the population, ahead of England and Wales at 25.6.

What did you hope to achieve with the telling of this story?
I am a dreamer at heart. I believe every reality must first be dreamt.

I dream of a world where sexual abuse and exploitation no longer exists.

And I dream of a world where sex is accepted as a natural bodily need.

That the very act, written or performed- explicit or not, is not actions or words that should be swept under the covers but boldly embraced.

There is nothing wrong with any kind sex if its consensual between two willing adults.

The Blessing

THE BLESSING

by Lizzie Lee

Genre: Romantic Erotica

Cover Designer: Jada D’Lee

After years of drifting, Trevor Warren’s world comes crashing down with the news of his brother’s death. Returning to his hometown in Evergreen, Colorado for his brother and sister-in-law’s funerals, Trevor realizes he has but a moment to grieve before his nephew, Greyson, is thrust into his life. Becoming the legal guardian to Greyson will either be a blessing or a curse. His late brother, Dean, was the golden child—the perfect son, husband, and father—while Trevor was his polar opposite. Despite his rough past, Trevor pulls his life together to become the father Greyson deserves. Although he tries to be a better man, he never feels like he’s good enough… especially for his neighbor, Veronica Clark.

Veronica “Ronnie” Clark is the picture of maturity and success. Despite having her life together, she’s always felt as if something was missing. From the moment she saw Trevor, she knew he was trouble wrapped in a sinfully attractive package. While she would usually shy away from men like Trevor—something about his rugged appearance captivated her. His handsome face, gorgeous ink, and wounded aura may have caught her attention, but it’s his giving heart that kept her yearning for more.

“You’ll get me through this, won’t you, Grey?” I ask him, wanting to laugh as he smiles up at me, watching my mouth move as if he were trying to understand. I take his smile as a positive response and kiss his forehead again. Everything will be all right.

I end up selfishly using Grey as a security blanket during dinner. As soon as my mother set a bottle of red wine on the table, I knew I was in for one hell of a night. I keep Grey in my lap, rocking him while I try to focus on anything other than the Merlot which is taunting me from a few feet away. Disappointment overwhelms me as I consider the power the drink holds over me. I’ve spent the past five years letting alcohol decide my fate, and now that I’m home, I want to regain my control. It’s not just me anymore. I have a child depending on me.

I pull my eyes away from the bottle and focus on my nephew. To my surprise, he’s staring up at me with wide, curious eyes. My heart splinters as I look at him. Now that Dean is dead, I can feel all my love pouring into his son. My heart fucking breaks, knowing Grey will most likely not remember his parents. He’ll never know how wonderful they were. He probably doesn’t have an inkling of understanding as to what has happened to them. I want to give him back everything he lost. Hell, I would’ve gladly taken my brother’s place, so he could have gotten more time with his son. But none of that is possible now. There’s no deal I could possibly make with God to bring him or my sister-in-law back. So, I’ll do the next best thing: I’ll devote my life to their child and try to give him the world. My brother would have expected that, and I’ll be damned if I let him down this time.

I’m done with the nights I spent blackout drunk–partying until dawn. I’m done with the random hookups with nameless women. I’m done with losing myself in a bottle of whiskey. That Trevor is gone. All that’s left is a broken man who’d do anything to make shit right for his nephew. I look away from Grey and give the bottle of Merlot a challenging stare. I’ll be damned if I let shit like this ruin my life any longer. I stare at the bottle as if doing so will take away my craving for it. It doesn’t. Only time will take care of that. I look down at my motivation and smile. Don’t worry, Grey. There’s two of us now.

Excerpt:

Chapter 1 – Deklan

“Even in death, she’s beautiful,” the coroner of Crook County said, admiring the body on the slab while I did my best to keep my shit. Never, and I mean never in my career had I seen something, someone so tragic.

Christ.

It was bad.

I pushed my mask tighter against my face, the one the coroner gave me after dropping some oil on it—apparently, to mask the smell, which didn’t work. Even though I was pushing it into my skin, I could still smell her. I had a job to do though, so I did my best not to breathe too deeply, or at all.

Creeks Bend was in Crook County and was about a hundred miles from where I lived in Morris Hill. It was tucked away, nestled up in the Appalachian Mountain Range in Tennessee. Though Crook County had a few deputies, they were missing a detective so when the call came into the station, my commanding officer, Dan, decided I needed a break from my life and I jumped at the chance to get out of town.

“Don’t you think?” the coroner asked, glancing at me.

“What?”

“I said, ‘Even in death, she’s beautiful.’ Don’t you think so, Detective?”

I wondered what he was breathing through his mask as he looked down at the victim’s body again. Her face—what was left of it—was rotten. Her jaw and mouth were gone, one eye was missing, and all the hair on her head looked like it was plucked out, one strand at a time, leaving not even a hint of stubble on her bald scalp. She had multiple puncture wounds, small and circular and it was unclear if something had eaten part of her face or if had melted away.

She was beautiful, not today but prior to her death, I thought, yes. Yes, she was probably beautiful.

“Sure,” I answered, continuing to inspect her mutilated body. I noticed all her fingertips were missing, along with her toes and the left side of her stomach. They weren’t missing because they were cut off; no, they looked just like her face—like melted plastic.

The coroner leaned closer to the victim, his hand hovering above her arm as he closed his eyes. I heard him take a sharp inhale, the coroner’s nose a breath away from the curve of the woman’s neck. “She was,” the young man said and I shook my head.

“Can we get on with it?”
